Tom Campbell is the thirteenth dean of the Haas School of Business, a position he has held since August 2002. He formerly held positions of US Congressman, California State Senator, Stanford University law professor, and, recently, California’s Director of Finance.

In December 2004, Dean Campbell took a one-year leave of absence from the school after being appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to be director of the California Department of Finance. He returned as dean of the Haas School in November 2005.

Prior to joining the Haas School in 2002, Dean Campbell was a law professor at Stanford University Law School for 19 years, beginning in 1983. He was elected five times to represent the Silicon Valley area of California in the United States Congress. Among his legislative achievements were authorship of the 1998 Food Bank Relief Act and the 2000 Peace Corps Reauthorization Act.

Campbell also was elected as a California state senator in 1993. During a two-year term, he earned ratings by the Sacramento-based “California Journal” as the most ethical state senator, the best overall senator and the state Senate’s best problem solver.

Ben Affleck is an actor, writer, and director who recently received the 2007 Best Directorial Debut award from the National Board of Review for his directorial debut with GONE BABY GONE.He first came to prominence in 1997 with the acclaimed Good Will Hunting, which he starred in and co-wrote with Matt Damon. For their work, they won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, as well as the Golden Globe Award and Humanitas Prize.

He has since starred in films including John Madden’s Academy Award winning Shakespeare In Love, Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor, Roger Michell’s Changing LanesĀ and Kevin Smith’s Jersey Girl. He won Best Actor in 2006 and a 2007 Golden Globe nomination. He next stars in the upcoming Universal Studios motion picture, State of Play with Russell Crowe, Helen Mirren and Rachel McAdams, scheduled to be released in 2009.

In addition to being a successful actor, writer and director, Affleck is a longtime political activist and strong supporter of many charitable organizations. Affleck is a passionate advocate who travels around the world independently to gain a deeper understanding of the complexity of issues facing Africa today. In the last year alone he has made three separate trips to numerous countries on the African continent with a focus on the Great Lakes region.

Speculation (in a financial context) is the assumption of the risk of loss, in return for the uncertain possibility of a reward. Only if one may safely say that a particular position involves no risk may one say, strictly speaking, that such a position represents an “investment.” Financial speculation involves the buying, holding, selling, and short-selling of stocks, bonds, commodities, currencies, collectibles, real estate, derivatives, or any valuable financial instrument to profit from fluctuations in its price as opposed to buying it for use or for income via methods such as dividends or interest. Speculation represents one of four market roles in Western financial markets, distinct from hedging, long- or short-term investing, and arbitrage.

Michael J. Sandel is the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Government at Harvard University, where he has taught political philosophy since 1980.

He is the author of Liberalism and the Limits of Justice (Cambridge University Press, 1982, 2nd edition, 1997; translated into eight foreign languages), Democracy’s Discontent: America in Search of a Public Philosophy (Harvard University Press, 1996), Public Philosophy: Essays on Morality in Politics (Harvard University Press, 2005), and The Case against Perfection: Ethics in the Age of Genetic Engineering (Harvard University Press, 2007).

His writings also appear in general publications such as The Atlantic Monthly, The New Republic, and The New York Times.
